Anxiety & Defiance

Anxiety and Defiance includes the work of four artists made during the lockdowns of 2020-21, featuring Duncan Kostello, David Miller, Nita Newman & Paul Newman. They reflect on these times through personal and individual responses to their domestic and psychological worlds and to the reimagination of the urban environment.

Starting in the home, Nita Newman reinterprets the objects within them, including the domestic still life. Different personas and the inhabiting of housebound characters inspired by Kafka’s Metamorphosis and Frankenstein are explored in the reframing of performance work in the home by Nita and Paul Newman and the artist’s studio space by Paul.  The exhibition also takes the material textures and frameworks of the home environment into a wider exploration of the domestic landscape by David Miller.

Through the window, there are flights of fantasy, sublime imaginary vistas and feverish dreamscapes, with an ominous apocalyptic storm present on the horizon, elements explored by both  David and Paul.

Anxiety about the fragility of our environment is ever present from before, during and in a post pandemic world. It is pressing in on us from climate change to the changing face of where we live with the continuing demolition and rebuilding of new business smart cities like Birmingham, aspects explored by Duncan Kostello and Paul. As  Kostello comments, ‘it is part of the entrepreneurialism and politics that are reshaping our lives.’

And finally, not to leave out, the defiant finger to the frustrations, restrictions, and obstacles of the last 18 months…

These are the anxieties and defiant responses by the four artists.

Mr Clean has been given a permanent home at New Art Gallery Walsall as part of The Twenty Twenty Collection

Joining a collection of work made during and inspired by the turbulent events of 2020, Mr Clean is a work about wearing a mask and individual identity with reference to mask wearing at work, in my own past  performance and painting and art history.

‘Following an open call, which received 220 submissions, The New Art Gallery Walsall has acquired 33 works by 31 West Midlands-based artists, to create the new Twenty Twenty Collection. This closed, capsule collection represents the significant events of the past 12 months, and commemorates this important historical moment which has impacted on everyone’s lives.

The works, spanning a variety of media from collage and photography to drawings and paintings, respond to world events over the last tumultuous year; from the pandemic and lockdown, to the Black Lives Matter movement and Brexit.

The chosen artists’ work will be profiled on the Gallery’s website and social media channels during this year, and be exhibited at the Gallery in a dedicated exhibition in our Community Gallery in early 2022. This will coincide with a solo exhibition by Keith Piper (whose work Surveillance: Tagging the Other, was also acquired with funding from Contemporary Art Society, in response to the events of last year) and the British Art Show taking place in Wolverhampton, bringing significant attention to the region, and further increasing the profile of West Midlands artists.’

I’m proud to have a number of  paintings; new and older works with this distinguished group of painters in a virtual exhibition exquisitely curated by Vivienne Roberts and Rosa JH Berland for Aleph Contemporary.
Now Live: ‘Reflections’ A Virtual Exhibition at Aleph Contemporary, featuring works by Joana Galego, Ben Westley Clarke, Paul Newman and Oliver Dorrell. Curated by Vivienne Roberts and Rosa JH Berland. Click below to go directly into the exhibition!.
.
‘Featuring the work of four contemporary artists –
Ben Westley Clarke, Oliver Dorrell, Joana Galego, and Paul Newman,
the exhibition ‘Reflections’ is a selection of painterly reveries as intimate and mystical portraits of desire and despair. Here in this collection of pictures, we find pastoral interludes under the veil of the mystical, as well as post-apocalyptic and stark scenes of the ordinary rendered in neo-Expressionist and Surrealist form. The artists’ sources are many: contemporary environmental and socio-political crises, city scenes, historic British painting, fifteenth century Indian verse, the work of Arthur Rimbaud, the enduring theme of the journey, the inheritance of Spanish painting as well as the more intimate and autobiographical.’
